What Really Are Atlantic Records Motives?!
I must say that I now think the whole Atlantic deal was a mistake from the start the label is turning out to be a total COLOSSAL failure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I watched the Byron Allen interview and Toni had expressed that the album was not only most finished for the most part but explained also how at first they (Atlantic Records) didn't know what direction to lead Toni towards which has always been an issue when it comes to her sound and just package….
I respect that in terms of how the industry envisions the current market but the first clue that a mistake was being made or could have been made, was when it was heavily suggested that the label wanted to bring Toni to another area musically or so it seemed because of the fact that Hip Hop sells the amount of units that make multimillions of dollars & is the top genre of music at the time and has been for years….
We saw this when Toni attempted to win over the same critics & fans alike that once referred to our diva as a cross between Anita Baker & Whitey Houston with “Hit The Freeway” and that was fine it didn't bother me really because it clearly meant that at this time after that experience Toni had control of her career and Atlantic had no other choice to spend more money in planning and production so she could fit in the right place enough so to remain “Classic” but still sound “Current” & thank God Toni is aware of what her fans want and what her limitations are in regards to the comfort & sureness that’s needed in anyone job or area in life to be successful after they wanted to bring her into the Hip Hop genre she stood up and said NOOOOOOOOO which made me feel like this is going to be a HUGE album, Toni knows what kind of music she likes to sing for example songs like “Let It Flow” etc.
That tells you that at first they just want to make millions off of Toni just like Barry Hankerson at Background wanted to as well until he disrespected Toni and large portion of Toni’s “Libra” project funds away to invest in that long gone one hit wonder Jo Jo!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm sure people have seen interviews over the years in which Toni herself revealed that when she was getting ready to record her first LP "Toni Braxton" that the "Head Honchos" so to speak, were very unsure just where Toni would fit in musically to sell records....
I remember her saying that many people in the industry, acknowledged how young she was but had this deep sultry mature voice that really had never been heard before from any artist maybe since Teena Marie or maybe the late great Phyllis Hyman mind you Ms. Hyman also had similar issues with the direction while at Arista a decade or so before Toni got her deal with them…
Toni expressed that "Babyface" LA Ried & Clive Davis didn't know really where to go with her either to them her voice was pretty much R&B with a heavy mixture of an adult contemporary sound....
Now, I bring this fact up because I don’t honestly believe this album is going to be as big as “Secrets” vocally simply because when I hear Toni’s singing on all of these some finished some not finished leaked tracks it just doesn’t sound like the music that makes her have that sense of comfort that she always has had and believed in even when people said “Oh Please, Her Voice Is Good Her Career Is Over” Nobody though that Toni would come out & make an impact like she did and hopefully will with “Pulse” (CROSSING FINGERS)
Anyway back to Phyllis Hyman though and the connection/similarities between her and Toni….
They both have and had that same problem with getting the respect that an artists on their caliber deserve point blank period and we are talking about two of the most talented beautiful females ever to be born and have a career in music PERIOD!
I think that Atlantic is more about making money then even Blackground was specifically in Toni’s case because yes they did put some effort into trying to get Toni’s name back out there and erase some of the damage that was done in regards to sales on the last two LP’s but what in God’s name are they doing now?!
The album is pretty much a little more then 2 months away from being ‘Unleashed” to the world and promo for “Yesterday” should have started right at the same time Whitney made her first appearances starting of course with the GMA performance…..
Atlantic knows the issues surrounding Toni’s history & quite frankly the label hasn’t in my eyes sufficiently done enough for Toni at this point, it seems they just don’t respect understand the gift she has which is “One In A Million” and has always been a guaranteed money maker for any company she is signed to which is all that matters to the industry these days!!!!!
Like most record labels in today‘s era of ‘”GARBAGE MUSIC” more times then others are just out for a “Quick Buck” like I just stated but hey, I can’t hate on the labels or their so called “ARTISTS” LOL I can only laugh SMH!!!!!!
EXAMPLE: If some dumb blonde with an extra sexy jaw dropping body gets signed to a major label and think she is being signed because she can sing and is just so naturally gifted when it comes to music WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT TELL YOU EVEYBODY?! LOL
Talk about Delusions of Grandeur child MmMMmMm what a hot ass mess! LOL The corrupt members “Good Ole’ Boys Music Industry Network” associated of all of the major labels are almost always going to pass on heavily promoting the Toni Braxton’s of the 90’s they rather lie to the world and promise that brand new “Protégés” that will has eternal staying power within in the industry with their music in general to me that is an extremely moronic approach to sell records for goodness sake just be honest CEO’s out of the love and respect for music!!!!
Let the broken down birdfaced heffas know Toni Braxton, Whitey Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Janet Jackson, Lisa Fischer, Aaliyah & Monica etc. are what you call TRUE TALENT and have bodies just as good if not better as the “Music Barbies“ topping the charts with almost every single they put out! LOL
Toni is a legendary artist and this whole new label deal is turning into just a hot mess from what I have seen so far & I felt absolutely compelled to type my personal feelings out on MY FAVORIITE Toni Braxton community website….
I feel very passionate about my views when it comes to Toni and I really do appreciate Dzmil for keep the site up and I feel that everyone on here is a friend to me and all of us are an alliance union!
Atlantic needs to love Toni and go out of their way more then they have to respect the most decorated female artist on their roster of signed artists, they need to be working around the clock for one to get the leak situation under control and put out more money no matter what the budget was set at because its not fair all of Toni’s hard work is being just thrown out all over the place that never happened with her first two LP’s probably because we didn’t have the computers that we have now but still come now lets make the get it right!
UNLESS TONI HAS A TRACK THAT CAN MATCH “YOU’RE MAKIN’ ME HIGH“ “UNBREAK MY HEART” OR EVEN HE WASN’T MAN ENOUGH FOR ME THEN WE CAN FORGET AT THIS POINT THAT SHE WILL RETURN AS WE EXPECTED HER TO IN GLORIOUS FASHION & IT WONT BE TONI’S FAULT I JUST HOPE THINGS TURN AROUND I CAN’T STOMACH THINKING ABOUT TONI GOING THROUGH ALL SHE HAS GONE THROUGH WITH HER SON WITH THE SEPERATION FROM KERI WITH HER HEALTH AND HAVE WORKED HER TAIL OFF FOR THIS ALBUM AND IT DOES NOTHING I WONT BE ABLE TO TAKE THAT IT WILL BREAK MY HEART SHE’S SO HUMBLE AND SO TALENTED AND SHE HAS A PROVEN RECORD OF GREAT SALES OF A BEAUTIFUL IMAGE AND A SET OF GOD’S LUNGS!

I agree that something is terrible wrong. How can you have "Yesterday" be officially out and not even one of the major radio stations here in NY (except on the Bryan McKnight show ocassionaly) plays it; plus everyday I watch VH1, MTV, hell not even BET! is running the video. I think deep down inside Toni must be hurting over these things, leaks and all. I think she is just playing things off and putting on a brave face for her fans, but it is evident the record co. is doing our girl dirt rigt now. You shall know them by their fruit. I don't see any fruits right now!! Still I am hoping things will turn around.

i hear u sis major stations here in NY don't even play Yesterday, i heard it on WBLS 107.5 twice and that was late nights like 2 or 3am its soooo sad BET not even running the damn video, major markets like 105.1, Hot 97, Z 100..not even playing her single on the radio I'm soo sad n lost

guys, the single hasnt been sent for adds on the urban format only on AC...once it goes for adds radio will satrt to play it, calm down.

I dont think Toni has ever been one to bite her tongue...if she felt any shadyness from Atlantic you bets believe she's gonna let it be known...we just have to be PATIENT and wait to see before judging, Tooni has been gone for 5 years and and hasnt had a hit in 10, to bring her back to the top is going to take time.

I believe they will turn things around, because why would they waste an opportunity and money. Toni has got to get back to a place where she feels the way she did before the bankrupcy, I think alot of the problems are that it simply may be the time lapse shes been gone and how muusic changes so much in 10 years. THE BRIGHT SIDE is that her hits were many and they really are timeless. If "Your Makin Me High" came out now as a single and we had never heard it-it would still b a major unique sexy hit. THEY NEED songs that are like that for her. Shes ready, but she really needs the perfect single before this album comes out. I like Yesterday and have played it and played it, but it just doesnt thrill me like when I heard Man Enough the first time, I remember getting chills when that guitar started in the beginning and then the video of her behind that wall-"waahoooohhoohhoooohhoooohohoooohyeah..uh huh, yeah" I still get chills. Everyone else musta felt it too, cuz it was a HIT!!! She I know will hav another one of those, but the time is NOW and....SSomeone has got to take down the leaks.

This obviously is a HUGE mess that is unfolding & by no means can be covered up at this point!!!!!
What this in my opinion tells me personally is just how much Atlantic Records respects the past legacy of great success they have had over the years with artists that are on the same list talent wise as Toni Braxton!!!
To me, it shows they to have now abandoned the appreciation of good music and fair promotion in the R&B community PERIOD even the Billboard charts specified RB music with Hip Hop what kind of crap is that?! LOL Is Anita Baker going to be able to compete with 50 Cent and LiL Wayne for a # 1 single?! I heard she plans on adding Snoop Dogg on a track from her upcoming album now does that fit in with Anita’s history of music?!
NOT ONLY HAS TONI BEEN PRESSURED TO DO HIP HOP BUT NOW ANITA BAKER IS TO?! WHAT KIND OF HOT MESS IS THAT?! WHO’S NEXT DIONNE WARWICK FEATURING FAT JOE & JAY Z?! SMH LOL
Now lets talk about Aretha Franklin who was also on Atlantic Records for years…
Toni is very much on Aretha’s level as well , she is also the “Queen of Soul” in my book just as Gladys Knight, Patti Labelle, Stephanie Mills, Teena Marie, Chaka Khan, Phyllis Hyman, Shirley Murdock, Anita Baker , Jennifer Holiday and just all of the GREAT female pioneers that have made the R&B genre what it is today not only with sales but with the kind of talent that helps people get through things and makes people happy which if you think about it, is primary basis to sells records and sell them in numbers that have never been seen before….
It’s a common ideology that has helped shape the current R&B acts that happen to also be female and have REAL TALENT so why the hell is Atlantic not recognizing that and trying to use excuses like “Music Has Changed“ and new ideas need to be put into place to make money?!
TONI BRAXTON HAS MADE MONEY JUST LIKE ANITA AND THE REST OF THEM WITH HER VOICE!
WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN HONESTLY IS THE POPULAR RECORD LABELS SIMPLY MUST CLAIRIFY THAT ITS NOT THE VOICES THAT NEED TO CHANGE BUT ITS MORE SO THE BEATS AND BACKGROUND URBAN FEELING MUSIC WHEN IT COMES TO R&B LETS BE HONEST HERE….

yeah our Toni still isnt getting the "superdiva treatment" that she more than deserves from atlantic!
they just talk crap -say good things about our Toni that she is one of the best blah blah blah..but far as how things are going right now,, like the promotion etc etc for our Toni, do they really mean it???????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!! i don't feel their sincerity for Toni -atleast for now. they just like playing it safe,,,not fully supporting Toni....they're just like "ok lets release Yesterday maybe next month, and the video lets just delay it maybe the next next month,,and the album,,uhhhmm lets see..maybe october 09? oh no, november 09? how about december 09? ..no! feb 2010 i think thats ok or we could delay it again till march, no need to hurry, what for?!!" -duhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG, let's publish this novel..... But I understand what you mean but I don't agree. Any record label's (or business for that matter) top concern is with profit. If they thought Toni was over and couldn't sell, they would not have signed her no matter how great her voice is. But listening to the leaks, they clearly have some to an agreement as to what she should be singing and the direction. I'm glad they didn't keep their stance of going towards hiphop or she would be looking and sounding a fool like that other DIVA from the 90's that switched her sound to hiphop (But I love Angels Cry and it supposed to be her next single), no names mentioned.
Except for the leaks, things are moving int he right direction.
